How to compare car insurance quotes in Massachusetts

To compare car insurance quotes in Massachusetts, decide on your coverage first, then ask at least three companies or agents for exactly the same coverages, limits, deductibles and policy term, with every discount you qualify for. Compare the totals line by line, then weigh price against service and claims reputation.

Step 1: decide what coverage you want

Start with the four compulsory coverages, at or above the minimums in force since July 1, 2025, then choose your optional coverages: higher Bodily Injury limits and the out-of-state extension, collision and comprehensive, underinsured motorist, medical payments, rental and towing. Our guide to Massachusetts car insurance requirements explains each one, and the quote checklist builds a list for your situation.

CoverageAsk every company for
Bodily Injury to OthersThe same limits, e.g. $25,000 / $50,000 minimum or higher, and whether the optional Part 5 (passengers, out of state) is included
Personal Injury Protection$8,000 (compulsory)
Uninsured / underinsured motoristThe same limits; underinsured is optional
Damage to Someone Else's PropertyThe same limit, $30,000 minimum or higher
Collision and comprehensiveThe same deductible ($500 unless you choose otherwise)
ExtrasRental, towing, roadside, accident forgiveness: the same choices on every quote

Step 2: gather your information

Have this ready before calling or opening a quote form, so every quote is accurate:

  • the year, make and model of each car, and ideally its VIN;
  • the name, license number and date first licensed of each licensed driver in your household and anyone who regularly drives the car;
  • any after-market equipment, and safety systems such as anti-theft devices, seat belts and airbags;
  • your driving history and how many miles you drive each year;
  • any gap in coverage if you are changing insurers.

Step 3: choose where to ask

Mix channels to see the whole market. Direct companies quote online or by phone; every licensed company must offer an online quote tool or a phone number. Exclusive agents quote one company. Independent agents quote several: ask how many companies they represent, and which, so you don't collect the same quote twice. The list of car insurance companies in Massachusetts shows who is licensed and who holds the most market share.

Step 4: ask the right questions

  1. The cost of each coverageAsk for the premium of each coverage and its limit, not just a total.
  2. All available discountsPassive restraints and other safety features, and the 65+ discount, are required by law; low mileage, multi-car, good student, bundling and group programs vary by company.
  3. The policy termSix months or one year? Every company must offer a one-year term if you ask.
  4. The merit rating planDoes the company use the state Safe Driver Insurance Plan or its own plan? This decides how your accidents and tickets are priced.
  5. Payment optionsInstallment plans usually carry a service fee; paying by electronic funds transfer may reduce it.

Step 5: compare line by line

Put the quotes side by side and check that the limits, deductibles, optional coverages and term are identical before comparing prices. If one quote is much cheaper, look for a six-month term, lower limits or a missing coverage. Then look beyond price: the Division of Insurance suggests weighing claims handling reputation, the location of the agent or direct writer, and the company's financial health.

About “switch and save” ads. Massachusetts law prohibits untrue or deceptive insurance advertising, and no insurer can legitimately claim that every driver will save by switching. “Customers who switch save an average of…” describes the people who switched, not what you would save.

Step 6: switch at the right time

The cheapest moment to switch is at renewal. When you receive the invoice showing your new premium and discounts, you have 30 days to move to another company without a penalty; you pay your former insurer pro rata until the new coverage starts. After 30 days, a penalty may apply, decreasing as the policy year goes on, so ask the new company whether it will reimburse it.

You can also cancel at any time, but you may only receive a partial refund, and the refund is issued only once the insurer has proof that your plates were cancelled or your coverage transferred. Check with your current agent or insurer before cancelling, and never let coverage lapse: you cannot keep a car registered in Massachusetts without insurance.

FAQ

How many car insurance quotes should I get in Massachusetts?

At least three, from different companies or agents. Because each Massachusetts insurer sets its own rates and merit rating plan, prices for the same driver vary widely from one company to the next.

What information do I need for a car insurance quote?

The year, make, model and VIN of each car; the name, license number and date first licensed of each driver in the household or who regularly drives the car; after-market equipment and safety systems; your driving history and annual mileage; and any gap in coverage if you are changing insurers.

Why is one car insurance quote so much cheaper than the others?

Check three things: whether it covers six months instead of a year, whether the limits and deductibles match the other quotes, and whether optional coverages such as collision or the out-of-state Bodily Injury extension are missing.

Can I trust ads that say switchers save an average amount?

Read them carefully. The Division of Insurance points out that “customers who switch save an average of…” is not the same as saying the average customer saves that amount by switching. Only a quote for your own profile tells you what you would pay.

Can I cancel my car insurance in Massachusetts at any time?

Yes, you can cancel at any time, but you may only get a partial refund, and no refund is issued until the insurer receives proof that your plates were cancelled or your coverage was transferred. At renewal, you have 30 days after receiving the invoice to switch without a penalty.
